The First African Moot at Egyptian Law Schools
Believing in the pivotal importance of the African continent and in Egypt’s role as a pioneer in the heart of this continent, in establishing the principles of justice and concepts of the rule of law, on both the jurisprudential and judicial levels,
the Faculty of Law at the British University is pleased to announce that it is hosting the 31st session of the Christof Heyns African Human Rights Moot Competition for the first time in a Faculty of Law in the Arab Republic of Egypt.
This round of the African Human Right Moot Court is concerned with human rights applications in the areas of climate change, human trafficking, data privacy and artificial intelligence. The legal issues presented in the Competition’s hypothetical case deal with legal questions related to the emerging challenges posed by the intersection between the use of modern technologies in human trafficking crimes, violation of privacy and intermediary liability.
About twenty African countries will participate in this 31st session, represented by Sudan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Angola, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, and the Arab Republic of Egypt.
For his part, Prof. Dr. Hassan Abdel Hamid, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the British University in Egypt, commented on this event explaining that:
“Hosting this established Competition comes as an integral part of the Faculty of Law at the British University in Egypt’s mission and vision to provide its students and the legal community with applied and practical legal education. The Moot Court Unit established as an independent central unit within the Faculty of Law is concerned with qualifying students to participate in and compete in the most important Moot Court competitions locally, regionally, and internationally. The Faculty of Law in Egypt previously hosted the regional session of Oxford’s Monroe E Price Media Law Moot Court Competition.” Professor Abdel Hamid added that "helping students and qualifying them to integrate into the legal community and its emerging issues such as information technology, privacy and human trafficking, comes at the top of the priorities that the Faculty of Law has always been is keen on since the first day of its inception."
The Moot Court Competition is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 25 and continue until July 30th, 2022.
The Opening Ceremony will take place on Monday morning, in the presence of Prof. Dr. Yehia Bahei El-Din, Vice President of the British University in Egypt, Prof. Dr. Hassan Abdel Hamid, Dean of the Faculty of Law, and distinguished honorable judges from various judicial institutions in Egypt, numerous esteemed academics and legal experts, and respected partners in major law firms in Egypt.
إيمانًا من كلية القانون بالجامعة البريطانية في مصر بالأهمية المحورية للقارة الأفريقية، وما تمثله مِن عمق استراتيجي لمصر كرائدة في قلب هذه القارة، والدور الذي مثلته، تاريخيا، وحاضرا ومستقبلا على الصعيد القانوني والفقهي والقضائي ضمن مباديء العدالة ومفاهيم سيادة القانون، تستضيف كلية القانون بالجامعة البريطانية في مصر الدورة الحادية والثلاثين مِن مسابقة المحاكمة التصويرية الأفريقية لحقوق الإنسان للمرة الأولى بكليات القانون والحقوق بجمهورية مصر العربية.
تعنى هذا الدورة مِن المحاكمة التصويرية الأفريقية بتطبيقات حقوق الإنسان في مجالات العدالة المناخية، والإتجار في البشر، وخصوصية البيانات والذكاء الاصطناعي. حيث تتناول القضية القانونية التي يتنافس فيها المتسابقون إشكالات تتعلق بأسئلة قانونية تشتبك بشكل قانوني مباشر مع التحديات المستجدة التي تفرضها الوقائع المتداخلة بين استخدام وسائل التقنيات الحديثة في جرائم الإتجار في البشر، وانتهاك الخصوصية.
يشارك في هذه الدورة الحادية والثلاثين قرابة العشرين دولة أفريقية، ممثلين بالسودان، نيجريا، إثيوبيا، أنجولا، بوركينا فاسو، غانا، كينيا، مالاوي، موزمبيق، السنغال، سيراليون، جنوب أفريقيا، أوغندا، زامبيا، زمبابوي، بوتسوانا، الكونغو الديمقراطية ، ساحل العاج، وجمهورية مصر العربية.
مِن جهته، علق الأستاذ الدكتور حسن عبد الحميد، عميد كلية القانون بالجامعة البريطانية في مصر على هذا الحدث، بأن "استضافة كلية القانون بالجامعة البريطانية في مصر لتلك المسابقة، يأتي ضمن اهتمام الكلية ورؤيتها التي تأسست عليها عام ٢٠١٦ بالدور المحوري الذي تمثله الممارسة التطبيقية للقانون في تكوين الطالب وتنمية مهارات التحليل والممارسة القانونية. ولذا تم تأسيس وحدة المحاكمة الصورية كوحدة مركزية مستقلة داخل كلية القانون تعنى بتأهيل الطلاب للمشاركة والتنافس في أقوى وأهم مسابقات المحاكمات التصويرية محليا، وإقليميًا، ودوليا. وقد سبق لكلية القانون في مصر استضافة الدورة الإقليمية لمسابقة أكسفورد". وأضاف البرفيسور عبد الحميد، أن "مساعدة الطلاب وتأهليهم على الاندماج في المجتمع القانوني وقضاياه المستجدة كتكنولوجيا المعلومات والخصوصية والإتجار في البشر، يأتي على رأس الأولويات التي تحرص عليها كلية القانون منذ اليوم الأول لنشأتها".
ومن المقرر أن تبدأ المحاكمة التصويرية يوم الاثنين الموافق ٢٥ يوليو وتستمر حتى يوم الثلاثين مِن يوليو.
ويجري افتتاح المحاكمة صباح الاثنين بحضور الأستاذ الدكتور يحيى بهي الدين نائب رئيس الجامعة، والأستاذ الدكتور حسن عبد الحميد عميد الكلية، ونخبة مِن قضاة مختلف المؤسسات القضائية في مصر، والعديد مِن الأكاديميين والخبراء القانونيين، والشركاء بكبرى مكاتب المحاماة
