This guide is created to support the Library instruction session delivered to Electrical & Computer Engineering Year1 students to help them finding sources for their required assignment in the "Report Writing and Data Presentation" course.

Required Assignment

To write a detailed technical report about:

1. A review on the state-of-the-art technologies about Alternative Fuel Vehicles (e.g. “All Electrical” vehicles, “Hybrid Electric” vehicles, “Plug-in Hybrid Electric” vehicles and “Hydrogen Fuel Cell” vehicles), including definition of each type, and a very brief description of their mechanisms, and a comparison of their operational scope against each other.

2. Assessment of their impact on the environment (mainly, Carbon emissions and noise) in comparison with the classical gasoline vehicles. Provide a sample of national or international regulations and incentives to use these vehicles.

3. A theoretical study on only the Electrical Vehicles (EV), focusing specifically on: Operating principle and its mechanism description, detailed description of its charging methodologies and mechanisms (plug-in and wireless charging), battery charging requirement and charging time, range of travel per charge, physical life span of batteries, and finally to identify the current problems and challenges that may impede EV spread.

4. A proposal to BUE to establish several charging points for EV vehicles within the BUE campus, taking into consideration the following points:

a. The estimated number of EV cars that may be owned by the BUE attendees. This number should be based on national and international statistics and expectations on ownership of EV cars in the society.

b. An analysis on the expected number of EV vehicles that may seek charging during the working hours of the BUE. This should be based on the estimated distance of travel from BUE to the average destination (one way or back-andforth), the travel distance per charge, and the required charging time. Hence, propose a charging methodology (plug-in or wireless), and an optimum number of charging points.

c. Estimation of the cost of establishing the determined number of charging points, their operational cost (price of electrical energy and maintenance cost), and hence determine an estimated fee for charging (e.g. per hour, or per KW of electrical energy, or flat rate with time limit per charge, … etc).

d. A proposal and recommendation to encourage BUE Executives to adopt your solution in the University, based on cost recovery principle.
