TurnItIn for Students: View the Enhanced Similarity Report

A step by step guide on how to use Turnitin for students

Access the Enhanced Similarity Report

Instructors have the option of allowing students to view the Originality Report. If your instructor has enabled this option, then the Originality Report for your 1st attempt to submission is usually created within 5 to 10 minutes of submission. Longer papers will take a little more time.

If the Originality Report is Not Available, then you should contact your instructor regarding this matter.

To access your Enhanced Similarity Report

  1. Click on the related class name then find the assignment you submitted to and click Open button to view the assignment dashboard.

  2. Access your assignment dashboard and under the Similarity column, you'll find your similarity score. This is a numerical and indicator of the amount of similarity found in your work. Click on that score to Open your enhanced similarity report.

Interpreting the Enhanced Similarity Report

Overall similarity

The overall similarity is the percentage of a submission's text that matched to sources from Turnitin selected databases. Each match is highlighted and detailed in the similarity report.

Match Groups

The new Match Groups tab categorizes the overall similarity into four groups based on the usage of in-text citations and quotation marks. Each match is color- coded to find what areas in that submission need your attention.

The color and criteria for each match group are:

  • not cited or quoted Not Cited or Quoted – Refers to text matches that are not written as quotations or have no citation to its original source that may indicate plagiarism. (Tis section may Include common words and terminologies).

Instructors should review to see if further action is required.

  • missing quotations Missing Quotations – refers to exact match to cited text with no quotation marks.

Instructors should review if quotation marks or paraphrasing is required.

  • missing citation Missing Citation - This text is written as a quote, but lacks a citation to its original source.

Instructors should review to see if citation is required

  • cited and quoted Cited and Quoted - This text is properly quoted and cited.

Instructors should review to see if the correct referencing style has been applied
